Learning to care for a boat is one of the hardest tasks a boat owner must do. Not only do you need to ensure that the engine is in tip-top shape, but you also have to care for the hull, clean steel implements, remove rust, dust down the cabin, and care for all of the other many important pieces of equipment that ensure your boat runs smoothly. For tips on how to care for your boat, and repair some of its most common issues, be sure to read over our helpful tips below.

Salt Deposits On Your Outboard

If salt deposits have begun to build up on your outboard engine, you’ll want to get them removed ASAP! Not only will salt deposits increase the appearance of rust and corrosion, but if they begin to appear near your engine’s spark plugs, your model could end up overheating or stalling suddenly. To remove the salt deposits, use a wire scrub brush and vinegar to remove as much of the salt as possible, then visit your nearest mechanic to have the cylinder head bolts re-torqued.

Your Boat is Damaged at the Dock

Even with a helpful set of fenders installed, your boat could still become damaged if you try to moor at a non-floating dock. To help prevent this, you can purchase—or build—a helpful set of fender boards to keep your boat from getting dented or scratched as you try to dock. Simply hang the boards horizontally between the fenders and the dock, and you’ll never need to worry about bumping into the port again.

Foggy Windows

When temperatures outside are hot, it’s nice to take a break inside your boat’s cool, air-conditioned cabin. However, the temperature difference between outside and in often results in thick condensation on cabin windows. To keep foggy windows at bay, apply a window cleaner with a damp rag to create a protective film that can repel condensation.
